The girls went home feeling that they were more comfortable in their understanding of who they are as young women.
For young people growing into adulthood, there are many adventures, some of which can be met in a way that promotes growth, and others that can have unwanted effects on the future of the person. For girls and young women, this is particularly true with regard to growing into sexual maturity, and information is a key component in preparing them for the future.
Hope for The Village Child Foundation through the programme, Sexual and Reproductive Health Information for Adolescent Girls, accepted the challenge to enlighten adolescents, mostly girls, so as to have information regarding physical development and changes that they experience as they pass from childhood to adolescence.
The adolescents learned that when learning about reproductive health, it does not only concern physical development or sexual activity. Mental, social, psychological and even economic issues are all factored in to understanding behavior change that accompanies moving into adolescence and adulthood.
The adolescent girls were divided into groups of six to discuss and give answers to the following questions:
- What are some of the changes that are expected in male and female during puberty?
- Where to get information on sexual changes and reproductive health issues you experience?
Answers of the group were presented by the group leaders and clarifications and explanation given as necessary. The girls went home feeling that they were more comfortable in their understanding of who they are as young women.
