Mothers Preparing for their Children’s Birth

It is only a mother who can really know what pregnancy is like and how to prepare for a child’s birth.  Even better than getting advice from a mother is getting advice from a mother who is also a nurse and/or midwife. This was evident when women showed up at the recent Hope for the Village Child Foundation Antenatal Clinic where they met such health workers.

It had been some time since health education sessions were held due to the COVID-19 restrictions on gathering in public places so often in the last two years, women came one by one, met the staff of the clinic for care and returned home. However, it was a happy occasion when a larger group of pregnant women arrived at the clinic together.

It had been some time since health education sessions were held due to the COVID-19 restrictions on gathering in public places so often in the last two years, women came one by one, met the staff of the clinic for care and returned home. However, it was a happy occasion when a larger group of pregnant women arrived at the clinic together.

The health worker explained to the women why the various tests were conducted before a woman gives birth. E.g., a woman’s blood group is determined in case during delivery she might need a blood transfusion. Other required tests were also explained. The women listened intently, as evidenced in the questions that followed the explanation.

Women asked questions regarding various infections they had been made aware of, and what were consequences of not getting proper testing and treatment before delivery.  After basic facts regarding the medical issues, other issues of nutrition were deliberated upon, and amid laughter, the women enjoyed stories of various customs that some women and groups practice.  All in all, it was an enjoyable day for the women who went home satisfied that they were more prepared for the upcoming births of their children.
